About Headford
Headford, some 28 km north of Galway, is the popular angling centre for the eastern shore of Lough Corrib, and Greenfields, some 6.5 km west of the town, is its boating harbour. The town is situated next to the Black River (noted also for its trout angling) which is the county boundary with Mayo.

Headford is also the centre of an area rich in archaeological monuments, ranging from prehistoric burial cairns, Iron Age stone enclosures, early Norman and later castles, to a bewildering array of monastic sites.

Today, the modern cattle mart, although replacing the fairs and markets once held in the town's two squares, ensures the local popularity of this North Galway town.

Headford is twinned with the picturesque town of Le Faouët in Brittany, France.

Places of Interest

Ross Errilly Friary
Standing in serene solitude on the South bank of the Black River, just two miles West from the town of Headford in Co. Galway the Franciscan Friary of Ross is recognised by many historians both past and present as the best preserved monastic ruin of its period in Ireland. It was founded in 1349 by the then Archbishop of Tuam Dr. Malachy MacHugh, who was a native of the Headford area and, as it happens, a member of the Franciscan order.

Killursa
Killursa is about 1.5 miles west of Headford on the Greenfields road. It is a ruined church set in an extensive graveyard. The ruin measures 70 feet by 24 feet, and it has a gothic pointed doorway, and a large mullioned gothic window, which indicates that the present structure was erected after the Norman invasion, 1169. A wall was built across this church, probably cutting off a section for the officiating clergyman, who had his habitat there. Killursa means the church of St. Fursa whose statue one sees as one enters the graveyard. It was here St. Fursa had the famous visions of the unseen world which grave authors assert inspired Dante to write his “Comedia Divina”.

Perfect to enjoy the countryside

Location was great et it suited all our needs. We really enjoyed the time we spent there. Easy contact with host & caretaker. It would be nice to have a more modern shower (lack of pressure), but it's just a small detail.

A peaceful retreat

The hosts were friendly and helpful from the start, as well as very approachable. They have made a very welcoming, well appointed home away from home, where at the beginning and end of the day, you can comfortably relax and unwind in comfort, with all the facilities you could need. The location is quiet and peaceful in beautiful surroundings, but convenient for travel around Galway. There was a personalised sense of hospitality to our stay, and we would highly recommend the cottage for a delightful stay.

Week in Galway

Lovely week in a peaceful traditional cottage. Slept well - only darkness, stars and birdsong outside - ate well - Headford has a friendly inn, Anglers' Rest - travelled miles in beautiful countryside - visited interesting places such as spectacular Kylemore Abbey. Recommend the cottage to anyone who wants a contrast to a busy working life.

Thoroughly Enjoyable

A thoroughly enjoyable stay in Mirehill Cottage. Although the property seemed small at first it was ideal for the two of us. Evelyn, the caretaker, was very friendly and helpful and made sure everything was sorted for us. Location was ideal for trips to Mayo and Connemara although getting through the Galway city traffic was a bit annoying. The cottage is located in a quiet area and just the ideal spot to unwind in the evening to relax and chill out if that’s what you want. Definitely recommended for that quiet getaway to relax, while at the same time experience the fabulous West of Ireland.

Authentic and peaceful

If you’re looking to escape the masses and reset in a peaceful location, here’s your cottage. Off the beaten track, no noise other than birdsong and the very occasional passing car, the darkest of nights and surrounded by mature trees and meadow. Well appointed, old fashioned in a very lovely way, the cottage has 1 bathroom (with bath and over—shower), 2 double bedrooms (one is walkthrough) a small lounge diner and small kitchen. Plenty of crockery, cutlery and pots for home cooking. Hairdryer, iron, washing machine, pretty much everything you need! Superstore not far away in Headford and plenty of good places to eat out. We loved it, hope you do too.

Lovely, serene setting - authentic home!

We had a lovely time at this cottage - just what we were hoping it would be! The cottage is off the beaten path and the drive up to it is lovely with a one lane road surrounded by trees that create the feeling of a green tunnel. The house is old (200 years) which appealed to us. It looks like an Irish thatch cottage that has been maintained and kept up-to-date without taking the authenticity away. I read complaints about the heat but we found everything comfortable and customizable. Every room has it's own heat with doors that can be closed in-between plus windows that can be opened...lots of flexibility! Although the house is small I think it could easily accommodate a family with up to 2 young children. For just the two of us it was cozy and comfortable. The setting is peaceful and serene with no dwellings on either side - just trees and pasture. We found it a lovely place to come home to after our days' outing. Thank you, Eileen and also Evelyn, who showed us the ropes when we got there!

Mixed feelings.

The cottage is clean, with all basic furniture items, cutlery dishes etc... Lots of space to enjoy in the summer, lovely trees outside. Inside not very roomy but that clearly is described. The wifi works OK. Some problems however did spoil it a bit for me: - The heating (electrical) was on with big signs on all the radiators and switches "don't switch off" "Don't change the settings" etc...The temperature inside was way too high, up to 23 c. In the evening when back inside I kept the front door half open and at night I opened the window in my bedroom. The outside temperature was cold, 5 to 10°c at most, but inside was way too warm. probably expensive for the owner too. When the caretaker came on the last day I told her she said "you should have switched it off". Sur why the heck did you put all these signs then? - There's hardly any pressure at all in the hot water system. When you take a shower you get a trickle of warm water and it takes forever to rinse off the soap and shampoo. - The fridge is small and the poorly insulated freezer compartment gets hardly cold enough to produce cubes, let alone store a couple of frozen food items. These problems should be easy enough to fix. It's a pity they existed in the first place.

This is the home where I was born. I left here with my mother after my father's death in 1957. We spent a number of years in the USA.

Upon retirement my mother and step-father returned to the cottage and spent many happy years there. I moved to England, where I currently live. Now there is nothing I love more than returning to relax and enjoy quality time with my little grandson in the home which holds so many happy childhood memories for me.

Por qué escogió este alojamiento

This is a family home. It was built over 200 years ago by the hands of my great, great grandfather in an era where there was no modern machinery. If you were to see it without plaster, no two stones are alike. It was originally thatched and had no running water or electricity. It was occupied by generations of good hard working people, who had very little but had hearts of gold! We have modernised it through the years and choose to rent it as a means to hold on to it as it holds a very precious position in our hearts.

Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial

There is complete peace and tranquility to be had here. The only noise to be heard is the birds singing on the trees. Peace, perfect peace!
