Amazing location!

This was the perfect location for the start of our daughter's wedding week. Me, my husband and our daughter spent two nights in this darling home. We were in town for her wedding and needed a smaller home until our whole family came into town. The home is literally seconds from the water and has a lovely restaurant just out the front door. Our host was lovely and made sure that everything was just as promised. I would most definitely stay here again!

Stylish interior, best location and grate mixture of traditional house and modern comfort!

This is simply amazing property with stylish interior, best location and grate mixture of traditional house and modern comfort! Being located in the very heart of the city of Hvar, it is very close to all infrastructure with restaurants, clubs, harbor, shops and anything you would need to discover the island and nearby beaches. You can feel at the center of cyclone and at the same time enjoy comfortable and quiet traditional old house, where you can feel the touch of the history. We absolutely loved to spend time at the terrace on the roof. It is cozy and has a lovely view. Kitchen is well equipped and if you would love to cook, it would be very easy to do so. Two supermarkets and open market with fruits and vegetables are just behind the corner. Downstairs is great coffee place which makes breakfasts so easy and enjoyable. There is great verity of beaches around which you can reach by foot, bicycle of by taxi boat. The host, Severo is very welcoming and helpful. He introduced us to some local people around where we can rent a boat, a car or a bicycle or just ask any question in case we need. He was always available on phone or personally if we needed him as well. We felt at home from day one. It was great time and we are absolutely in love with Croatia! Kind regards, Elena

Stunning apartment steps from everything in Hvar

This place is amazing! Severo (owner) didn't miss a thing when he remodeled his apartment. Very well done! A little about the space: Both bedrooms have comfortable queen beds and there is a cool loft with two twin beds. Perfect for families with older kids and couples. The kitchen is very well done, and has everything you'd need for cooking and entertaining. The rooftop patio is private, spacious and great for sunsets (and a nice view of the fort). An added bonus: the apartment is on top of the number one rated cafe on Hvar (Nonica, per TripAdvisor), so it was nice to start the day off with pastries and a coffee! The apartment is located one street off the harbor (maybe 25 meters to the water) and you have views of the harbor from the front bedroom and rooftop deck. It is close to everything you'd want to do in Hvar town...everything is walking distance. Severo was incredibly hospitable and very quick to respond to any inquiry (and we had quite a few). We very much appreciate the TLC he put into his place and his attentiveness to his guest! We couldn't have asked for a better experience! We'd highly recommend Severo's apartment!

Beautiful villa in a great location!

We have spent six days in Villa Varda in the old historic part of Hvar. Villa is very tastefully decorated. Owner paid lots of attention to details and used high quality materials throughout the house. You will find everything you need for a pleasant stay. Location couldn’t be better; villa is situated in a calm street, just few steps from main attractions. We would not hesitate to come back again!

Fabulous apartment

My family and I stayed in Hvar this July for 3 nights. We stayed at this beautiful little apartment. My husband and I are both very involved in real estate, therefore, we have a very keen eye. This apartment was beautiful. It had just been renovated and there wasn't one detail missed. The stone walls were gorgeous! It also was in the absolute best location. Just a few feet off the water, AND above the most charming bakery. We enjoyed many a glass of wine on the rooftop deck, and many mornings sitting on the stairs at the bakery. It was an absolute lovely stay. On a side note, Severo was a wonderful host. We accidentally left our US dollars in the apartment. I might add that it was a sizable amount of money. We didn't realize it until we had gotten back to Dubrovnik on the ferry (4 hrs away). Severo was such a sweet man, that he put our money in a box, made arrangements with the ferry the next day and got it to us. That was so above and beyond what I would have expected, that it spoke miles of his character. This was our favorite place we stayed at in all of Croatia. Cheers! Stephanie

Severo, nice to meet you. A father, a husband, a pharmacy owner, an art collector. Although stemming from a Iong line of pharmacists (my grandfather graduated pharmacy in Vienna in 1895), I have an MA in Art History too and have used this passion of mine in decorating Villa Varda. Every detail was thought through and crafted with the utmost care, being careful not to harm the object's original nature.

I will be a proper host to you, in order to establish a kind of trust that allows us to perhaps cooperate in the years to come. If you have doubts, if you need anything, feel free to ask, I'm here for you. ;)

The 500-year legend behind Villa Varda - Latica – The Myth of the St. Cross

Villa was once known as the Bevilaqua House, named after its owner, Hvar’s harbor master and Admiral Niccolo Bevilaqua, who lived in late 15th and early 16th century.

On the 6th of February 1510, the skies darkened, a heavy rain fell down upon Hvar, followed by a strong storm. At 7 PM the ground shook three times and the roof of St. Annunziata’s church exploded in pieces.

At the same time, in the house next to the church, the Bevilaqua House, the admiral’s granddaughter was storing clothes and cleaning the room of dust. She found a small sooty crucifix, took it into her hand to clean it when a thick, dark liquid started dripping from the crucifix.

She called her mother and her father, who said that this was probably the color that has melted off the crucifix. Still, to make sure, they called the town’s painter, Stjepan (Stephen) Vitaglich, who momentarily found out that it was not color dripping from the crucifix, but blood!

Cosa rende unica questa struttura

Alarmed, they called upon the church’s canon and curator, Matija (Matthew) Lukanich. He was already shaken by the fact that the church’s roof went to pieces only minutes ago. When he found out about the blood he fell into a state of excruciating pain and near-madness.

As it happens, it was the very Lukanich who swore on that very crucifix in early 1509 to kill all of Hvar’s nobility. Lukanich was, along with Tomo (Thomas) Bevilaqua, the girl’s father and admiral’s son, the main conspirator of a planned coup and massacre that was to follow. Tomo Bevilaqua died in an accident in November of 1509, so the coup had to be postponed.

Now looking at the same crucifix bleeding made Lukanich fell into despair.
At first, all parties involved and the citizens of Hvar understood this as a warning from God, that saying to sustain from any bloodshed. As hours passed, Lukanich fell more and more into madness, ending up flagellating himself to death, six days after the discovery of the crucifix.

In the end, Hvar ended up in a civil war, which began in May 1510 and lasted for four years. Feel free to find out more by entering 'Hvar rebellion' into a search engine of your choice.

The events of 6th of February were first noted in detail by Hvar’s judge, Pavao (Paul) Paladinich. Other testimonies were collected by an apostolic visitor 69 years later, in 1579, from individuals who were children in time of these events. All testimonies were published in A. Gabelich’s ‘The uprising of Hvar’s commoners’ and J. Bracanovich’s ‘500 years of St. Cross worshipping’.
The bloodied crucifix and the adherent blooded cloth are kept today in the Hvar cathedral.

Be as it may, whether you believe in the story or not – you will be enjoying your vacation inside a living part of history, now there exclusively for your pleasure!
