Explore the Charms of Lion's Head
Nestled on the scenic Bruce Peninsula, Lion's Head is a charming village that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and small-town charm. Surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of Georgian Bay, Lion's Head is renowned for its stunning landscapes, including the iconic limestone cliffs that give the village its name.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find an array of activities to enjoy. The Bruce Trail, one of Canada’s oldest and longest footpaths, winds through the area, offering hikers breathtaking views of the Niagara Escarpment. For water lovers, the pristine waters of Georgian Bay provide excellent opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and boating. The marina is a bustling hub in the summer, where you can watch the boats come and go or set out on your own aquatic adventure.

Lion's Head is also home to a vibrant community with a rich cultural heritage. The village boasts a selection of quaint shops, local artisans, and cozy cafes, perfect for leisurely afternoons. The Farmer's Market is a highlight, offering fresh local produce, handmade crafts, and a taste of the local flavor.

In the evenings, the Lion's Head Beach is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike, where you can enjoy stunning sunsets over the bay. The nearby observatory offers clear skies for stargazing, making it a perfect end to a day of exploration.

Only a 35-minute drive from Lion’s Head, Tobermory is another must-visit destination. Known as the “Freshwater Scuba Diving Capital of the World,” Tobermory offers diving enthusiasts the chance to explore numerous shipwrecks in the Fathom Five National Marine Park. Tobermory also features the famous Flowerpot Island, known for its unique rock formations, caves, and hiking trails.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, Lion's Head provides a welcoming and picturesque setting for an unforgettable getaway, with easy access to the attractions of Tobermory just a short drive away.

Have you ever wondered about why the waters of Georgian Bay can appear to take on a beautiful aqua colour? It's a product of light refracting through calcite in the water.
Calcite comes from the dolostone that makes up the escarpment. Rainfall events (rain is naturally slightly acidic) or water agitating surrounding rocks can cause calcium carbonate to leech from the stone or other calcium-rich compounds, such as marl, and crystallize in the lake water, becoming calcite. These crystals double-refract the light (also called birefringence), creating the beautiful hue that our eyes see.
This is the second post of a series about the geology of the Niagara Escarpment.
