Winthrop's unique local attractions
Winthrop has a unique claim to fame: it's home to the only active inland waters lighthouse in Maine. The Ladies Delight Light is a small lighthouse in the North Bay of Lake Cobbosseecontee. Dating back to 1908, and just 25 feet tall, the tower is maintained by Cobbosseecontee Yacht Club. A 10-minute drive from a Winthrop vacation rental, Cobbosseecontee has many miles of shoreline, dotted with pretty coves and little islands. It's a popular family-friendly destination for sailing, swimming, picnicking, sunbathing, water skiing and canoeing. There's also a small golf course nearby.
Lakeside fun in Winthrop
The village of Winthrop sits between the beautiful lakes of Annabessacook and Maranacook. With a historic library, bustling shops and historic mill buildings, downtown Winthrop has a pleasant village feel and can be explored by foot. But, if you want more shopping and dining choices, you're just a 20-minute drive from downtown Augusta. The village also boasts a small but pristine public beach on the southern banks of Maranacook Lake. It's an idyllic spot for lake swimming and kayaking. In summer, this is the location for fun, family-friendly events and concerts or, come winter, ice-fishing and cross-country skiing.
Enjoy seasonal color in Winthrop
Winthrop vacation rentals are a short drive from the Androscoggin, Maine's 3rd largest river. Along the green miles of its riverbank, the Androscoggin Riverlands State Park attracts skiers and snowmobilers in winter. In lake spring and summer, you can hike, kayak, canoe, drive ATVs and horseback ride along its many trails. Strolling through the woodlands in the fall is a glorious way to enjoy the autumnal color, although the park is also a popular hunting destination, so be sure to stay visible by wearing bright orange if hiking during the season.
Winthrop's great outdoors
A Winthrop vacation rental is a great choice for birders – the nearby lakes provide opportunities to spot bald eagles, ospreys and loons. Anglers will be in heaven too: fish for bass and perch on Wilson Pond, or head to Androscoggin Lake to try your luck with bass and trout. Many hiking, biking and horseback riding trails cut through the local area. From your Winthrop vacation rental, one of the closest is the Mount Pisgah Fire Trail, a short but rewarding walk through woodland, wild flowers and blueberry bushes to an old observation tower with panoramic views over the sparkling local lakes and gently rolling acres of forest.
